Percussion is generally considered to be distinct from timpani. While all percussionists learn to play timpani, timpanists in most orchestras are specialists, while the percussionists play any number of different instruments.
@Sam: I'd agree with that distinction re orchestral sections (despite timpani being a percussion instrument). But in that case the timpanist wasn't polled at all!
Rather than assume discrimination and marginalisation of one of the most important instruments in the orchestra, I preferred to assume that the timpani had been lumped in with the percussion for the purposes of the survey.
@Yvonne: The timpanist is, quite frankly, insane. Don't let the gentle beard fool you. To poll him on this vitally important matter would obviously have been dangerous. (And I say that as a musician who regularly shares a stand with said timpanist's stepson...)

Since when has the Minnesota Orchestra been performing Messiah without timpani?

I sure hope the orchestra isn't forced to pursue lengthy and costly impeachment proceedings over this.
I wonder if Jacques Lemaire plays violin... ;)
Thanks for helping spread this important news story, Sam... the only downside is that if Osmo is ever really arrested, nobody will believe it.
