Viola Destruction!
For your general amusement (or horror, if you happen to be a violist,) please do enjoy this video of legendary violist Yuri Bashmet enduring the scariest thing that can happen to a musician mid-concert...
And in case you're wondering, yes, that is a ridiculously valuable 18th century viola that just exploded in Yuri's hands. And no, that doesn't make it wrong to laugh - the chunk that snapped off isn't the valuable part, and is eminently replaceable...

As a violinist, it's a load of worry off my mind to see this actually happen, something I've always worried a bit about since my first week of violin lessons. No, the strings won't slash my throat, and no, nobody's eye will be put out. Whew.
I love that the audience applauded after the moment of stunned silence. I suppose that's what audiences do when there is no other protocol to follow. But what is the sentiment, exactly?
"Good job not getting your eye poked out!"
"That was really amazing playing up to the part where your instrument exploded."
"Good job not freaking out over that."
"Sorry for your loss."
Maybe a combination of all of these?
Reminds me of when a piece of the fine tuner on my e-string was launched into the far balcony of a church during a pachebell canon wedding processional. I never did find that little fine tuner piece... it might have gone into orbit.
One would think that a particularly chivalrous member of the viola section would offer his/her instrument to continue the piece and head out for a smoke break...
