Actually, Oliphant Chuckerbutty is just his shortened nickname, kind of like J-Lo. According to Wikipedia, his real name is "Soorjo Alexander William Langobard Oliphant Chuckerbutty." The more you know.

Wow. What parent comes up with a name like that? And why, of all those names, would you choose to go by Oliphant rather than, say, Alexander?

Maybe he had a lot of contemporaries named Alexander. And William. And Soorjo. And Langobard. So he had to go with Oliphant so nobody would confuse him with those other guys?

The name is Anglicized/transliterated East Indian. Surjo --> Soorjoo. Chakraborty/Chakravarty --> Chuckerbutty.
