Clapping, part III

A few last thoughts on the clapping question.

Also, some Clapping Music. It's utterly hypnotic...

Minnesotans are too nice... we'll show our applause by coughing

Season premiere at my city's big orchestra on Saturday: Audience held applause to the end of pieces and, more impressively, kept the coughing down. I think the effect was good with lots of full-bodied whoofing for the individuals acknowledged during the curtain calls.

A question: Why do orchestras not publish concert night rosters? It is clear that they're auditioning people for some high profile positions when a couple of the same unfamiliar faces show up on the weeks the music director deigns to be in town. There are also some faces who show up occasionally for what may be on-the-spot substitutions. On the other hand, all we shlubs ever get to see is a list that stays the same all season.

So, when we root root root for the home team, for whom exactly are we rooting?

I think this is a fabulous idea, RN, and though I can see some logistical challenges (the roster frequently changes less than an hour before the concert if someone calls in sick, and the seating and personnel change from piece to piece on many programs,) it's definitely something we should explore.
